Travis is at home in the studio. He is constantly creating, drawing, sculpting and envisioning new works. The artist creates both functional and sculptural works, at times melding the two.
About the Artist:
My interest in art began at home. My father, Robert Hinton, is also a professional artist and made the arts a strong part of my development. These early lessons drew me to the high school art room and into my collegiate studies at the University of South Dakota, where I received my BFA in ceramics and art education. I received my MFA in ceramics from the University of Kansas in 2003. I am currently a ceramic artist and art educator in Sioux Falls, SD.
Process of the work:
I take on different methods in the creation of my ceramics, using high-fire reduction, salt fire or wood fire methods. My most recent works explore relationships between wood ash glazes and colored clay fired in a salt kiln. When different types of ashes are used, different colors and textures can be achieved. Each batch of glaze I mix can result in one-of-a-kind differences depending on the type of tree or plant that was burned to create the ashes.
Studio time is by appointment only. Call or email to set up a viewing.
